El Dorado County Federated Church

                               Placerville, California

For lots of us, an interest in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, his compassion, his courage and his teaching is not pursued because of the history of the Church.  How can people who say they follow Jesus be so violent, so prejudiced and so cruel?  How can the disciples of Jesus become involved in crusades, anti-Semitism and homophobic hatred?

At its best, clear Christian thinking can help us at least live with, if not explain this tension.  We are fortunate to be the recipients of a body of work from a Christian thinker of singular wisdom, courage and clarity.  Without reservation, I recommend to you the work of Father James Alison, an English, gay, Roman Catholic.  His books reflect on the relationship between religion and violence, gay/straight issues in the church and the recovery of an authentically Christian version of life.  If you read "Faith Beyond Resentment," "Undergoing God," or "On Being Liked," you will be renewed and changed.  He is, I believe, the C. S. Lewis of our time.  Let me know what you think.

5 Wishes!  I wish the person who will make health care decisions for me when I can’t will know:

  • The kind of medical treatment I want or don’t want
  • How comfortable I want to be
  • How I want people to treat me
  • What I want my loved ones to know

Are you looking for an easy to use form to communicate your wishes with your loved ones?   Come to an informational discussion facilitated by Karen Shelnutt, RN on Tuesday April 15th at 9:30 or 11:00 am; or Thursday April 17th at 6:30 pm in the Health Ministry Room.

CROP WALK helps world and county

Nearly $20,000 was raised when 150 walkers joined
El Dorado County’s Church World Service-sponsored CROP walk--Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. The three-mile walk through downtown Placerville involved nine local churches, with Federated raising $11,769 of the total, of which
Doris Henke collected $6,260.
Twenty-five percent
will remain in the county to be equally divided among Grace Place, SHARE, and The Upper Room. The remainder of donations will support communities dealing with poverty around the world.
Chairs Chuck and JoAnn LePere say “Thanks to all of you-- recruiters, sponsors and crossing guards who helped to make this year a success!”

Through guided meditation and a listening to scripture in the prayer form of ‘Lectio Divina’ this Lenten Prayer time will invite a contemplation of these words from Matthew’s gospel and their meaning in our lives: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen…Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matt. 6:5 - Facilitated by Lucie Chalifour, Spiritual Director - Suggested donation $10.00 - All are welcome  - No prior experience with meditation/Lectio Divina necessary.

Lent and the Holiness of Ordinary Things

Lent began on Ash Wednesday.  On that day the shape of a cross was inscribed on the foreheads of Christians using ashes from last year’s Palm Sunday branches.  The imposition of these ashes speaks of our mortality, fear of death and our hope of eternal life in Christ.  During Lent, we will continue thinking about these themes in the light of the simple objects we use in worship Sunday by Sunday.

Many thanks to Dottie McCalley of Ardencaple Christmas Forest for donating the beautiful tree for the Historic Church this year.

do you need a prayer?  The prayer chain is available at all times for your prayer request.  If you have a prayer request, please call Dot Polston, Norma Paulin or Carol White.  We need more links added to our chain - if you believe in the power of prayer; you can add powerful strength to our chain.  We need you and you have only one call to make to pass on a prayer request.  Call Dot Polston if you would like to be a part of this powerful ministry.

Sunday Bible Study - All adults are invited to Sunday Bible Study at 9:45am in the Fireside Room.  Our present focus is the Atonement and our teacher is Dr. R. C. Speoul, pastor, theologian and Bible teacher on radio and TV.  Questions?  See Burney Sheeks.

The Little Blue Book - Take Advent and Christmas one day at a time!  Enjoy a 6 minute daily reflection on the weekday gospels in The Little Blue Book from December 2 through January 13.  Time of day will vary for you, but this booklet gives you a pattern for prayer.  The right hand page is the gospel reflection.  The left hand page is the feast about various traditions and customs of Christmas.  This Advent booklet is based upon the writing of Bishop Ken Untener, a friend of neighbor of our very own Leslie and Dick Bush when they lived in Saginaw, Michigan.

STEPPIN' FORTH in 2008: Every year we have to count on new people to "step up" in the footsteps of older members who die, or move away, or find themselves in reduced circumstances.  Happily, Federated Church has just such folks ready to "step up" and be counted (on).  We have received 25 NEW pledges and 39 INCREASED pledges (a total of 200 pledges) for 2008.  Pledges for 2008 already exceed the total for this year by nearly $7,000 and there remain a few folks still to be heard from.  We welcome the gifts of time, talents and treasure from ALL our people; and at this time we offer special THANKS to those who pledged for 2008.  Federated wants to budget prudently and pledges (estimates of giving) make this possible.

THANKS FROM YOUR TREE OF KINDNESS TEAM!

Wow – The response to the Tree of Kindness has been fantastic! However, I do have one request:  BE SURE TO FILL OUT THE GREEN ½ SHEET AND PUT IT IN THE RED BOX BESIDE THE TREE OF KINDNESS. We need to know who has adopted each family in case there is a change or we need to contact you for some reason.  I am missing green sheets for these families: 8, 15, 17, 25, 28, 30, 43, 44, and 69. If you took a green sheet home by mistake, PLEASE call to tell me (Robin Stanley) your name and phone number and the name and number of the family you adopted (you can leave a message).  Also, because we had more large families this year, I divided some of those families into two requests to make adopting “half” of a family a bit easier  Remember – gifts that will be picked up by the families are due to the church by Sunday, Dec. 16th.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Robin Stanley.

FEDERATED BOOK CLUB - Please join us at 1pm in the Fireside Room

January 3rd - The Mapmaker's Wife by Robert Whitaker

February 7th - A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah

Federated Sunday at Upper Room Next Sunday December 16 - Shift Times Have Been Shortened!  The third Sunday of every month is Federated’s turn to prepare and serve the meal at the Upper Room, a local soup kitchen that serves a hot meal to low-income and homeless people 364 days a year.  Since we have such an efficient crew, we’ve shortened the shift times.  Preparation is from 1:30-3:30, and serving is from 3:30-6:00.  The sign up sheet is in the church entry, or call Helen at 622-0273, ext. 16.

Grace Place - the guests at Grace Place badly need some warm socks.  Grey or dark colors would be best.  Also, there is a need for more towels.  Please leave the items clearly marked for ‘Grace Place’ in the Resource Center and the Sunday Team Leader can take them to Grace Place.  Many Thanks.

TIRED OF SINGING ALONE IN YOUR CAR?  Come raise the roof with your family and friends, singing carols in joyful praise in the old church on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7:00 p.m.  Cookies and fellowship afterwards in Price Hall.  Want to bring some cookies to share?  Please call Leslie Bush.

Glenn and Marian White have a new address:  Heritage Pointe - 1765 Shuey Ave.  - Apt. 127 - Walnut Creek 94596 .

fe Health Ministry  fe

Deacons meet this Wednesday at 6:00 pm in the Health Ministry room.

Holiday Health Tip #4  Rest your mind!  Silence during this busy season can be a rarity.  Our senses are bombarded with the music, lights, to do lists, and our days are filled with self imposed expectations. Take time during this Advent season of waiting, carving out a time in your day, a quiet space to just sit, gaze, pray, listen.  Silence is good self care.

“Legal Made Simple” is the focus of the December 19 workshop with Diana Steele, attorney with El Dorado County Senior Legal services.  Learn about trusts, living wills, estate planning to plan now to safeguard yourself and those you love.  Workshop held at the Placerville Senior Center, 937 Spring St from 1:30-3:00 pm.

YOUTH MINISTRY AT FEDERATED

Fellowship and fun for youth 7th-12th grade

Christmas Party for Junior and Senior High Youth This Week!

Bring a side dish to share and a wrapped white elephant gift for exchange.  We’ll provide pizza and sodas.  If you plan to attend, email (victori@directcon.net) or call Helen and she will tell you where it will be.  We kinda  decided last minute to do the party that evening because more people could attend, but haven’t confirmed whose house it will be at!  We’ll split the difference timewise and have it from 5:30-7:30 pm.

God still needs a few good carpenters…

And roofers, painters, wheel chair ramp builders, and just generally handy people with a heart for spreading God’s love!  That’s exactly what our youth do when they go to Mexico over spring break to build houses and to Native American reservations over the summer to do home repair.  The Mexico trip costs youth $550 and the Sierra Service Project trip costs $410.  One thing we are doing this year to help offset costs is offering crosses made from carpenter’s nails.  Youth will be in front of the church from now until we leave for Mexico or SSP with these crosses.  Your donation for a cross helps defray the costs of these mission trips.  Check them out toady!

For more information on any youth activities,

Check them out today!

For more information on any youth activities, contact Helen Mansfield at 622-0273, ext. 16.

Tree of Kindness Sprouts Goodwill

With summer barely gone, it may seem early to be thinking about the Tree of Kindness – but planning for Federated’s Christmas giving opportunity begins now, according to Coordinator Robin Stanley, and the Tree of Kindness will be decorated with wishes at the All-Church Advent Event on Wednesday, November 28. Federated will again team with Placerville School District and El Dorado High School District to identify needy students and families in our community. Says Robin, "Our partners in the schools know best those who might benefit from the jackets, shoes and blankets that are the focus of our project." More Infor.

Description: Use this feature-rich image viewer script to allow your visitors to selectively choose an image to view, by clicking on a link. The image is launched in a separate, fit window. Features that set this script apart from others are:

  • Supports a text description, displayed beneath the image.

  • Ability to set a background color/image for the pop up window.

  • Only one pop up window open at all times to avoid agitation. For example, if the user clicks on multiple links to view multiple images, the same pop up window is used, instead of spawning a new one for each image.

  • Pop up window is centered on page the first time it's activated. Subsequent calls to it are not, so the user may choose to drag the window to a custom location if desired

Example:

- Breakfast pancakes
- Lemon Cake
- MeatLoaf

Step 1: Simply copy the below code into the <head> section of your page:

 <script type="text/javascript">

// JK Pop up image viewer script- By JavaScriptKit.com
// Visit JavaScript Kit (http://javascriptkit.com)
// for free JavaScript tutorials and scripts
// This notice must stay intact for use

var popbackground="lightskyblue" //specify backcolor or background image for pop window
var windowtitle="Image Window" //pop window title

function detectexist(obj){
return (typeof obj !="undefined")
}

function jkpopimage(imgpath, popwidth, popheight, textdescription){

function getpos(){
leftpos=(detectexist(window.screenLeft))? screenLeft+document.body.clientWidth/2-popwidth/2 : detectexist(window.screenX)? screenX+innerWidth/2-popwidth/2 : 0
toppos=(detectexist(window.screenTop))? screenTop+document.body.clientHeight/2-popheight/2 : detectexist(window.screenY)? screenY+innerHeight/2-popheight/2 : 0
if (window.opera){
leftpos-=screenLeft
toppos-=screenTop
}
}

getpos()
var winattributes='width='+popwidth+',height='+popheight+',resizable=yes,left='+leftpos+',top='+toppos
var bodyattribute=(popbackground.indexOf(".")!=-1)? 'background="'+popbackground+'"' : 'bgcolor="'+popbackground+'"'
if (typeof jkpopwin=="undefined" || jkpopwin.closed)
jkpopwin=window.open("","",winattributes)
else{
//getpos() //uncomment these 2 lines if you wish subsequent popups to be centered too
//jkpopwin.moveTo(leftpos, toppos)
jkpopwin.resizeTo(popwidth, popheight+30)

Step 2: Set up the image viewer link, something like the below:

<a href="#" onClick="jkpopimage('food1.jpg', 325, 445, 'Breakfast is served.'); return false">
Breakfast pancakes</a>

Where "food1.jpg" is the src of the image, and following that, the pop up window's width and height, and finally, an optional text description (set it to '' for none).

Enjoy this useful script!

Honoring and celebrating the saints of our lives!

You are invited to the first “Remembrance Table Celebration” November 1st from 1:-3:00 p.m. in Price Hall to celebrate loved ones (family, friends, pets) who are deceased.  Create and bring a small table display of the person's photographs, memorabilia, favorite flowers, hobby or uniquely personal items, to create a Remembrance Table.  These will be part of an afternoon of shared story-telling honoring our loved ones and afternoon tea; concluding with a service of remembrance led by Andrew.  You can see an example of a Remembrance Table in front of the church on Sundays and in the Health Ministry Room during the week.  This event is inspired and created by Jeanette Ryder who has participated for several years in the “Altares del Mundo, a visual and auditory mix of contemporary and traditional altars that honor ancestral roots and worldwide traditions of remembrance,” in Sacramento.  We will be honoring our loved ones in the Christian tradition on November 1st, “All Saints Day.”  If you have any questions, please email Jeanette at ijart@directcon.net or call Health Ministry at 622-0273, ext. 13.

GRACE PLACE HOMELESS SHELTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS -
The homeless shelter for El Dorado County, known as “Grace Place” is scheduled to open Friday, November 2nd.  With the help of county funding, United Outreach is able to hire a Director and two Overnight Shift Monitors for three months.  We are still trying to raise additional funding to pay the Director and Monitors for the rest of the schedule.  Meanwhile, we still need volunteers for Sunday nights.  Volunteers are needed for the evening greeting and hospitality time, an evening snack, and Monday morning breakfast.  One overnight volunteer would still be welcome.  Please contact Linda Gates or email at linda.gates@earthlink.net if you can help with this important community ministry.

GRACE PLACE VOLUNTEERS TRAINING SESSION TODAY

Anyone interested in continuing as a volunteer or becoming one should attend a Training Session today at 4:00 p.m. at Green Valley Community Church on Missouri Flat Road.  Learn how to deal with conflict, difficult people, and making shelter residents feel welcome and safe.  Meet our new Director, too!

FEDERATED MEN

The Federated men will meet for breakfast and fellowship on November 3rd at Denny's restaurant on Fairlane in Placerville at 8:30am.  All men of the church are invited to join us.  For any questions please call or Bart Bawden.

  • A tea party for 4 little girls, complete with individual photos from Annieberries
  • A handmade quilted wall hanging from Karen Shelnutt
  • A vacation house for a trip to Newport Beach

We’ve got lots of great “Virtual Door Prizes” - so even if you can’t make it to the Auction on Saturday, November 3rd, you can still participate and help support Grace Place.  Tickets are $3 pre-sale and $5 at the door.  Contact Susan Hunn or Linda Gates) for more information.

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BOOK ROAD
- As we look at the life of Jesus Christ, we see he had a full and complete life with God. From the life of Jesus Christ there emerge six distinct areas:  1) Devotion to God when we see Jesus praying.  2) Virtue in thought, word and action when we see Jesus battling with Satan in the wilderness.  3) Empowerment by the Spirit when we see Jesus ministering in great power.  4) Compassion toward all people when we see Jesus helping the sick and the needy. 5) Proclamation of the good news of the gospel when we see Jesus proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of heaven.  6) Harmony between faith and work when we see Jesus integrating sacred and secular.  The Yellow Book Spiritual Formation Groups are rooted in these six areas.  The goal is to gain an understanding of these aspects of Jesus’ life and incorporate into our daily lives.  By doing so, we will grow more and more in Christ’s teachings and our lives will transform.  We start November 7th in Fireside Room.  Come join the “Transformers.”

Lamplighters -
will be meeting Thursday, November 8th at 12:30pm in Price Hall for dessert.  We have a special program appropriate for our stage in life.  Kaytee Vossen is a Senior Real Estate Specialist who really enjoys helping seniors assess their needs.  She has a set of guidelines to help in the decision making process regarding when and where we make our retirement moves.  Bring your questions and experiences as we continue to live life to its fullest.

Prime Time -.  On November 17th we will be attending the Imagination Theater’s production of Lil’ Abner with a light supper beforehand at the beautiful home of Jan Axline.  If you have not already signed up with Dianne, call Vivia Carpender or Leslie Bush for ticket information.

Classic Dry Cleaners
,
with locations in the K-Mart shopping center in Placerville and the Bel Air shopping center in Cameron Park, will donate 10% of the cost of services they provide to those who attend Federated Church back to the church.  The process is simple - you take your cleaning and alterations to Classic Cleaners and then put the receipt they give you in the box marked "DRY CLEANERS" in the church office.  A volunteer will take the receipts to the cleaners once a month and receive a check for the church equal to 10% of the cost of the services provided.

"A holy harvest of gifts and graces of the people of Federated Church for the good of people in our community and world," the Auction features donations of quality goods and services. Past years auctions have included items ranging from Kings basketball tickets to a hand-built redwood planter, gourmet dinners, babysitting, theater tickets, kayaking and time at vacation homes. Auction Co-Chair Linda Gates asks that donations be made by Sunday, October 28. Donation forms and suggestions are available outside the sanctuary between worship services beginning Sunday, September 23. Auction-goers are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance to allow planning, $3 per person at the Holy Harvest Auction table.

"Donate, be there, bid and buy!" declares Co-Chair Susan Hunn. Buoyed by a commitment of $42,000 from El Dorado County Supervisors, Grace Place has funds to operate for just half of the cold season. As Linda explains, the goal of participating churches such as Federated is to complete the funding through March, ensuring homeless people a warm, dry place to sleep.
