How are Christians to regard the 10 Commandments? These
rules for living are significant in both Judaism and Christianity. The question
for us as disciples of Jesus Christ is, in what way? Are they all binding on us
because the law is in some sense eternal? Are none of them binding on us because
we live by a higher law, the law of love? Are they, perhaps, multi-choice, with
some being more significant than others?
In our thinking about these commandments, given to Moses on Mount Sinai, are we
to focus on what is expressly forbidden or rather to search for the implied
positive message? Besides those things that we are told ought not to be done are
there also things which ought not to be left undone? Are they binding moral
imperatives or, ancient, irrelevant legalisms? How do they relate to the 2 great
commandments of Jesus, to love the Lord our God and our neighbor?
Beginning in July we will struggle with these questions in our worship
gatherings. We will take the time to seek to locate the 10 commandments in the
context of God’s grace and love. We will listen for the “no” and the “yes” as we
seek to be obedient to God’s call to be faithful disciples of Christ.
